v Harleston Town (away) 12/10/19 (Norfolk Senior Cup)

At Wilderness Lane in Harleston
The Shannocks were knocked out,
The hosts scored in the first half: four
Progression not in doubt.

After the break we tightened up
And with full-time so near,
Big Halliday scored with his head
Allowing one small cheer!

Next week we’re at home in the league
Felixstowe are our guest,
And hopefully on Saturday
We’ll return to our best!

I think we miss Nelly up front
And Hubbard at the back,
The strength and height the pair provide
Lately we’ve seemed to lack.

v Framlingham Town (away) – 5/10/19

The Reds ventured to Framlingham

The ground: Badingham Road,

It was time for another

Eastern Counties episode.

And it was not that long before

We went into the lead,

Tim Cary’s clip finding the net

As he ran through at speed.

The equaliser came along

Within minutes – just three,

A penalty after a foul

By Cox was blasted free.

Just before the half hour mark

A cross from Horton saw –

Tim Cary from close range poke home

And Shezza’s lead: restore!

The second half was scrappy with

Chances at either end,

But with under ten on the clock

Up popped their dividend.

The Fram equalised once again –

A cross into the box

Was headed into his own net

Unluckily by Cox.

A point away perhaps was fair,

After the cup next week,

We have back-to-back games at home

And six points we will seek!

v Downham Town (h) 29/9/19

Downham visited The Rec

The rain, erratic, fell,

And sadly, using strength and skill

The home side they did quell.

It wasn’t long before they scored

They were not scared to shoot,

Their second strike a cracker with

The outside of the boot.

It looped over Birdy with ease

But our lads got stuck in,

And looked to pull one back before –

All hope leapt in the bin!

On half-time a free header saw

The Town add number three,

And every single Shannocks fan

I think would here agree:

The league leaders were far too strong

And quicker than us too;

Another brace was added soon,

Through our defence they’d chew.

A Coxy header at the end

Was saved right on the line,

But in defence – we must admit

There is a warning sign.

We were outclassed throughout the match

Next week shall tell a lot:

The Castlemen from Framlingham

Are sitting second bot!

A good result in Suffolk will

Of this, I have no doubt –

Restore some confidence and spray

A fresh new hope about!

v Fakenham Town (away) 24/9/19 – Thurlow Nunn League Cup First Round

A gloomy Tuesday evening saw

Us travel in the cup,

And just before kick off the rain

Heavy – would not let up.

The match was even, the ball zipped

But chances: very few,

And right before half-time The Ghosts

Began to turn the screw.

A penalty was hammered home

And then – after the break,

A long free kick caught Birdy out

And chances, more, they’d take.

At four nil Crosby pulled one back,

A very well placed shot,

The hosts scored number five but then

Big Nelly took a pot!

A thirty-five yard free kick flew

Past Gammon in their goal,

But in defence we need to lift

Ourselves out of this hole.

It’s Downham Town on Saturday

A tough game it will be,

A point at home would be a boost

But we shall aim for three!

v Kings Lynn Town Res 21/9/19

It was a strange day at The Rec

It was most odd indeed;

The Shannocks looked a different class

And took an early lead.

Tim Cary finished in the box

With – on the clock – just ten,

And minutes later Jarvis scored –

Converting his missed pen!

But then the tide turned, most bizarre

The Linnets took control,

They finished nice and cool: 3 times

And left us in a hole!

The second half was much the same,

Ash Jarvis pulled one back,

But SIX times Kings Lynn found our net

With their classy attack.

6-3 it ended, very strange,

One of “those games” it was,

But on we’ll move to Fakenham

And very fast, because –

On Tuesday we’re at Clipbush Park

The Challenge Cup draws near,

And hopefully the lads will once

Again step up a gear!

v Leiston Reserves (away) 14/9/19

The pitch was great, the sun was out

In Leiston we were set,

And once again a goal fest us

Shannocks fans soon would get!

The match began most lively, with

It’s tempo sharp and quick,

And after only twelve minutes

A goal Kerry would nick.

A Cary run was finished, calm

And almost number two

Was added shortly after when

Kerry was put clean through!

His shot flew over bar and stand

But then we ‘heard’ them rumble…

The Reds were hungry for more goals;

Leiston’s defence would crumble!

After the break it happened fast

Tim Cary firing home,

And then, at last, Jarvis would score

When in the box he’d roam.

He smashed in from a fiery cross

But just before the third,

The Blues had their sub sent straight off

With Kerry’s vision blurred!

The Shannocks bossed the game in style

Their passing most sublime,

And Boycey had a ‘turn’ in goal

(An early pantomime)!

Next Abbo, from a corner kick

Nodded home number four,

Before Jarvo’s class powerstrike

Burst Leiston’s net once more!

Defending – the Reds strong and smart

Guarded their box with pride,

Big Carus, with his quality

Again bolstered the side.

That’s three wins on the trot for Shez

As up to fourth we move,

Kings Lynn Reserves are here next Sat

And we are in the groove!

Sixy Football! v Wisbech St Mary 7/9/19

The Reds shot quickly out the blocks

And on the clock – just five

Minutes had passed before Cary

Scored with a silky drive!

It wasn’t very long before

He added number two,

A classy through ball by Ben Boyce

Made Wisbech’s defence stew!

And then after a skilful run

With extra tricky feet,

He left defenders on their rumps –

His hat trick was complete!

St Mary pulled a scrappy goal

From close range shortly back,

But super passing and movement

Kept up the Reds’ attack.

A Crosby corner wasn’t cleared

And Jarvis blasted home,

Before Kerry developed, too

The goalscoring syndrome!

Right on half time he popped one in

A cracking forty-five,

And straight after the restart their

Goal hunger stayed alive.

Kerry soon made it number six

Of this season – his third,

And that was all the scoring done –

The rest had been deferred!

The woodwork rattled several times

With other chances: missed,

But on the Shannocks marched again

Their passion shall persist!

Next up it’s down to Suffolk for

A match at Victory Road,

And let’s hope Leiston shall see a

Net busting overload!

Norwich CBS (away) 27/8/19

The venue was: The Field of Dreams

For Shezza on the road,

The Shannocks were out for revenge

As this performance showed!

Big Nelly was back once again

And very soon he’d get

Another goal – this from the spot

Smashing the top left net!

The penalty was fair – although

The trip should have seen red,

And then it wasn’t long before

CBS went ahead.

Atwell smashed the equaliser

Home from a close range,

And then the “turning point” moment

That did seem rather strange!

Shane Cox made a superb tackle

Just outside of his box,

The ref harshly whipped out the red

And all plans hit the rocks!

A header from the free kick saw

Norwich score number two,

It looped in underneath the bar

And crowd unrest soon grew!

Hubbard came on for Sheringham

And just before half-time

Shorty drilled home a low free kick,

His finish most sublime!

With ten men in the second half

The Shannocks bossed the game,

Ben Boyce losing blood for the team

And then the winner came!

Another free kick, on the right

A world class goal was scored,

Nelly bent it and burst the net

And our lead was restored!

The passion was incredible

The lads fought for the shirt,

They dug deep and they got stuck in

Their quality overt.

The “sin bin” did come into use,

As Norwich lost their rag;

But Sheringham deserved the win –

Three more points in the bag!

Next up a home game at long last

Wisbech will soon be here,

And with the Reds playing so well

They should be filled with fear!

Needham Market Res (away) 24/8/19

A strange trip down to Suffolk saw

The Shannocks taste defeat,

Although the scoreline was most harsh

The football played was neat.

With players out we gave it all

On their new 3G pitch,

And we will see, without a doubt

This merely as a hitch.

The opening half often showed

The Whites go very near,

The final ball just would not fall

And Needham’s lines would clear!

The Marketmen did counter quick

With chances few and far,

Birdy made a fantastic save

But most strikes: under par!

After the break – much of the same,

The patience and the strive

Did not pay off, sadly, this week

As goals would not arrive!

It is a pity that we did

Not possess V.A.R.

Because the line may have been crossed

When smashing off the bar!

Coxy thought that it did, and

By quite a lengthy way,

It would have been interesting

To have viewed a replay!

The hosts scored scrappy goals late on

Through scrambles in the box,

This summed the day up pretty well

But we’ll roll up our socks

And take on Norwich CBS

In Bowthorpe on Tuesday,

And, fingers crossed, the Shannocks will

Put on a great display!

v March Town United (away) 17/8/19

The Shannocks March On

The Reds travelled to Cambridgeshire

To play March at The Lane,

The wind was calm, the sun was out

And cleared up had the rain.

The Hares were in outstanding form

A real tough nut to crack,

But Sheringham looked confident

And big Nelly was back!

The Shannocks – looking fast and strong

Their passing neat and slick,

Caused great eruptions in the stand

And went up one-nil quick!

After a melee in the box

Remaining sharp and cool,

With ease, Nelly, rustled the net

But next up: the ‘crown jewel!’

Andrew Hubbard at right back had

Been classy from the off,

And at his long range pass, Zidane

Himself would never scoff!

He pinged it pinpoint from his half

Then Nelly, what control,

And great flick over the keeper

A truly world class goal!

The Shannocks bossed the first half, and

Could have scored number three,

Through Nelly’s driving run and shot

And when Cox let one free!

After the break the Reds played well

The game seen out in style,

Bird tipped a long strike round the post

To boost his clean sheet pile!

The Shannocks march on, what a win;

A super Nelly brace

And top class team performance put

A smile on every face!

Next up we face the Marketmen

To Bloomfields we will go,

Looking to score plenty more goals

With our blazing ammo!
